R-Value has long been part of the building and construction industry as the measure of thermal performance of a structure. It has been a long-held belief that higher R-Value is the same as more efficient building insulation. Spray Polyurethane Foam (SPF) has changed some of the most common beliefs associated with R-Value. There are many places online that discuss the R-Value “Myth” or “Fairy Tale”. Before talking about the “Myth” and “Fairy Tale” argument given by some, CPi would like to give brief definitions of two important terms:
Conduction: transfer of thermal energy between neighboring molecules in a solid substance such as insulation.
Convection: transfer of air molecules through insulation and ultimately the building envelope.
R-Value is a measure of a material’s resistance to heat transfer. The R-Value test performed under the guidelines of ASTM C518 takes into account the resistance of all three heat transfer mechanisms: conduction, convection and radiation; however, convection is given only minor consideration. Unwanted convection through the building envelope is the biggest contributor to energy loss.

CPi has worked very hard over the years to become an industry leader in the production of spray foam rigs for the SPF community. We are constantly striving for new designs, engineering improvements and optimizing their performance. CPi understands that building the most professional looking, diverse and high-end performance spray foam rigs does not mean much if the rig is not safely and properly engineered. To complete the unmatched care and concern delivered by our manufacturing department we would also like to take this week and give some insight into the best practices for towing your spray foam rigs.
There are a number of important things to remember and understand to make towing your rig safe and comfortable. We will take a look at the following areas:
- The Tow Vehicle
- Determining Your Rig’s Gross Trailer Weight
- Driving Tips and Recommendations
There are many other aspects to rig loading and towing that are important to understand when handling your spray foam rig. Visit www.sherline.com to learn more on other rig loading and towing topics not covered here.

With the recent thrust from the highest levels of government, the demand for more energy efficient and environmentally friendly structures has never been as great as it is now. Most know of the $1,500 tax rebate available to home owners who make energy efficient upgrades; however, there is a wide range of other rebates, incentives and credits available throughout the country. This week, CPi would like to give our readers access to the growing world of both Federal and State incentives for the use of renewable and efficient products such as spray foam insulation.
The ranges of programs available are quite diverse and beneficial for those who take advantage of them. Programs available to consumers, builders, architects, and more are already many and are growing almost daily throughout all levels of government, from the federal level down to the local. Trying to keep up with and research the large number of opportunities out there can be a daunting task, so CPi has put together a list of the most common incentives, as well as a collection of sites that will help you in finding which programs are available to you.

The program being talked about by President Obama could pay off big for those in the spray foam industry, as much as $12,000 could be available as a result. It is about time that spray foam and its benefits are getting the time and effort they deserve. Recently President Obama discussed plans for a new incentive program for those making energy efficient upgrades call Cash for Caulkers:
President Obama proposed a new program Tuesday that would reimburse homeowners for energy-efficient appliances and insulation, part of a broader plan to stimulate the economy.
The administration didnt provide immediate details, but said it would work with Congress on crafting legislation. Steve Nadel, director at the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, who is helping write the bill, said a homeowner could receive up to $12,000 in rebates.
The proposal is part of the Presidents larger spending plan, which also includes money for small businesses, renewable energy manufacturing, and infrastructure.
We know energy efficiency “creates jobs, saves money for families, and reduces the pollution that threatens our environment,” Obama said. “With additional resources, in areas like advanced manufacturing of wind turbines and solar panels, for instance, we can help turn good ideas into good private-sector jobs.”
